CARDIGAN WELSH CORGI:

Cardigans are said to originate from the Teckel family of dogs, which also produced Dachshunds. They are among the oldest of all herding breeds, believed to have been in existence in Wales for over 3,000 years. The Cardigan is a long, low dog with upright ears and a fox-like appearance. Unlike the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, whose tail is short, the Cardigan's tail is long. Cardigans can be any shade of red, sable, or brindle; they can also be black, with or without tan or brindle points, or blue merle, with or without tan or brindle points. They usually have white on the neck, chest, legs, muzzle, underneath, tip of the tail, and as a blaze on the head. An average Cardigan is around 10.5 to 12.5 inches tall at the withers and weighs from 30 to 38 lb. for the male and 25 to 30 lb. for the female.

Cardigans have more substance and are stockier, heavier dogs than the Pembrokes and have a distinctive front assembly, with turned out front feet. Their ears are more rounded at the tips and wider set and their feet should be round, instead of more oval-shaped like the Pembrokes.

Originally bred for herding sheep and cattle, they have proven themselves as excellent companion animals and are also competitive in herding dog trials, agility, obedience, rally and tracking. Like most herding breeds, Cardigans are highly intelligent, active, athletic dogs. Cardigans are affectionate, devoted companions that can also be alert and responsible guardians. They do, however, need daily physical and mental stimulation. For their size, they need a surprising amount of exercise. Due to their working heritage, their needs would be best met in open space, although they can happily live in apartments with access to space.

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are typically a 'one-person dog'. They tend to be wary of strangers and reserve their affection for a select few, with whom they are familiar. If socialized at a young age, and with proper training, they can be wonderful and loving companions.

One of the best features about both breeds is their personality. A “big dog in a small package”, their temperament is based upon their original life as a companion and valuable farm helper and guardian, all of which make them adaptable and outstanding house-pets. Corgis are dogs who want to be truly involved with his family; his family should WANT to become involved with him too. He is full of fun and will shower that family with devotion and sensible affection. Caring for his people (including children) comes naturally to these intelligent, alert and responsible dogs. HOWEVER, both Pembrokes and Cardigans can be quite stubborn and opinionated and may not be the best choice as a first dog. They require sensible and positive training right from the start and will be willing and ready for anything you’d like to do. One of the best features is that, if you share your life with a Cardigan or Pembroke Welsh Corgi, you will laugh and smile daily!!
